When an individual drinks alcohol, it gets absorbed by the stomach and small intestines and then into the blood stream. When a person exhales, one can smell alcohol on his or her breath.
A breath alcohol test measures how much alcohol is in the air upon exhalation. In the DOT world, if the reading is 0.2 or more, this is a positive result and the person must be removed from safety sensitive job duties for 24 hours or when tested, the BAC is below .02%. Any employee who has a BAC reading of .4 or greater must be evaluated by a substance abuse professional and complete the recommended treatment.
At RI MA Drug Testing, we use the Lifeloc Phoenix 6.0BT Evidential Workplace Breath Alcohol Tester which is an approved breath alcohol testing device by the Department of Transportation and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Alcohol testing is performed for the following reasons:
- Random Testing
- Post-Accident Testing
- Reasonable Suspicion Testing
- Return-to-Duty Testing after a positive test
Breath alcohol testing is performed in the non DOT world for the same reasons and usually follow similar guidelines as the DOT guidelines but is ultimately up to the employer.
